Key seating results when the drill pipe wears a slot in the site of the wellbore. This condition can arise anytime a hole deviates from vertical, especially if it contains dog legs. Sticking usually occurs at a tool joint or a drill collar having a larger diameter than the drill pipe.
How Our Key Seat Wipers Elimination Key Seats
The Sovonex™ key seat reamer consists of a an integral mandrel and a wiper sleeve that rotates freely on the mandrel. The sleeve has a diameter slightly larger than the drill collar and therefore becomes wedged in a key seat first when tripping out.
At this point the sleeve is locked into position automatically so that is follows the rotation of the drill string. Dressed with ultra-hard tungsten carbide hardfacing, the five wiper blades on the sleeve then ream out the key seat easily, even in hard formations.
As our key seat reamer has a locking mechanism on either end of the sleeve, it can ream key seats both when tripping in or tripping out.
All key seat wiper connections are machined to API Spec 7-1. The mandrel and sleeve are machined from high-grade AISI 4145H steel and full-length heat treated for maximum robustness.
Proper dressing of the blades requires thorough experience and is only done by designated hardfacing experts.
