Clad Metal Composites

Clad metal composites are explosive-bounded metals with special characteristics.

During the process of explosive welding (also called explosive bonding) two metal welding surfaces collide with a speed of at least 100 m/s ² with the aid of explosives. The collision energy brings together the welding partners on the atomic level, resulting in an exceptionally strong bond. Since the melting temperature is not reached, no inter-metallic compounds are formed. 

Explosive welding is especially useful for connecting two or more metals that cannot be welded in a conventional way or when a large welding surface is required.

For example, copper cathodes explosive bonded with a thin layer of titanium have a much longer lifetime than pure copper cathodes while still being highly cost-effective.
