Drilling Rig Substructure

The substructure of a drilling rig can be classified into the following types: Box on box type, skid and trailer type, slingshot type, spin-up type and telescope type.

  • Box on box and skid and trailer type substructure: The front platform is relatively high, enabling the installation of a standard blowout preventer (BOP). The back platform  is relatively low and thus suitable for installing heavy equipment such as drawworks, transmission unit, etc.
  • Slingshot type: This type of substructure is suitable for electrical drilling rigs. The design of the drill floor and platform allows for the installation of the substructure and mast at ground level. The mast and the substructure are then lifted as a whole. Hydraulic cylinders on the right and left side of the mast act as bumpers.
  • Spin-up type substructure: The design allows for the installation of the substructure and mast at ground level. The mast is then lifted with the substructure as a whole.
  • Telescope type: The mast and the substructure are lifted hydraulically. This type of substructure is light-weighted, easy to install and move.

Drilling Rig Substructure Features and Specifications

  • The lifting structure has been optimized, resulting in significant load reduction on the drill floor and a total weight reduction of the substructure and the mast of 10%.
  • It only takes 15 to 20 minutes to raise mast and drill floor using a common pulling-up line.
