Cementing Tools For All Drilling Applications
Sovonex™ cementing tools cover a wide range of drilling operations. To achieve maximum reliability, each tool is specially designed for its specific set of applications.
At the well surface, the cementing head provides a connection between the drill pipe or casing and the cementing line. It houses one or two pump-down plugs and can be extended with a positive ball dropping sub for use in hydraulic liner hanger completions.
Designed for high-pressure applications, Sovonex™ cementing heads are suitable for most cementing jobs.
Cementing Head Types
- Drill pipe cementing head for liner or inner string cementing
- Casing cementing head with single or double plug manifold
Features
- Swivel sub allows rotation of the manifold during cementing
- Flag indicator sub signals the release of the sub
- Fast make up adapter for quick installation
The pump down plug, also called drill pipe dart, is released from the surface and pumped down the drill pipe. It separates the cement from the drilling fluid, wipes the drill pipe and finally latches into the liner wiper plug located at the end of the liner hanger setting tool.
Sovonex™ pump down plugs feature a non-rotating design that reduces drill-out time after cementing. Ideally suited for highly deviated wells due to the special design of the wiper fins.
The liner wiper plug is located at the end of the liner hanger setting tool and pumped down the liner when the drill pipe dart latches into it. The liner wiper plug acts as a barrier between the cement slurry and the displacement fluid and wipes the liner ID.
The liner wiper plug provides a pressure seal when it latches into the float collar or landing collar at the bottom of the liner string.
Sovonex™ wiper plugs feature a non-rotation lock mechanism for easy drill-out. Several wiper fin designs are available for efficient operation in different hole diameters.
The landing collar is part of the shoe track in a hydraulic liner hanger assembly and consists of the following components:
- A shear seat (ball seat) on which the setting ball is landed to allow differential pressure to be applied to hydraulically actuated tools above. Increasing the pressure shears out the seat and restores circulation.
- A latch mechanism for the liner wiper plug that seals of the liner when cementing is complete.
Like all of our float equipment, Sovonex™ landing collars are manufactured from the same high-quality steel as our API casing. Designed for extra precision, the ball seat shears out at exactly the pressure specified.
With the liner wiper plug set, the landing collar provides a high-pressure seal, reliably preventing backflow of cement slurry into the liner.
Located above the float shoe as part of the shoe track, the float collar provides a stopping point for the cement plug after running the cement. In liner completions, it is used in conjunction with a mechanical liner hanger assembly.
Sovonex™ float collars provide a high flow rate during cementing and reliably seal off the casing or liner after landing of the cement plug. A double valve version is available providing an even stronger pressure seal.
For cementing large diameter casing we recommend using one of our stab-in float collars that allow stabbing of the drill pipe directly into the float collar.
Located at the bottom of the shoe track, the float shoe guides the casing string downhole and contains a backpressure valve that prevents the flow of any fluids into the casing.
Sovonex™ float shoes feature a conic design that facilitates running the casing considerably. Available as single and double valve versions for use in high backpressure environments. Fast drill-out capacity to reduce non-productive time.
For cementing large diameter casing we recommend using one of our stab-in float shoes that allow stabbing of the drill pipe directly into the float shoe.
Stab-In Float Collars & Shoes
Inner string float equipment can save time and money when cementing large diameter casing. In conjunction with a stab-in adapter, the drill pipe is connected directly to a stab-in float collar or shoe, thus avoiding the need to
During inner string cementing, the drill pipe is connected directly to a stab-in float collar or shoe via a stab-in adapter. The cement slurry is then run through the drill pipe instead of the large diameter casing.
This construction provides the following advantages:
- More accurate calculation of cement volume possible
- Reduced cementing displacement time
- Smaller cement plugs can be used
- Easier and faster drill-out of smaller components
When an existing liner string needs to be extended uphole or to the wellhead, a tieback seal nipple is first stabbed into the liner top polished bore receptacle (PBR) to seal of the liner.
Sovonex™ tieback seal assemblies provide an extra long sealing area consisting of several rows of moly glass seal rings and rubber sleeves. Also available with an integrated packer for use in high pressure wellbores of up to 10,000 psi (69 Mpa).
